DC Solstice Weekend - Events and Details

and other community notes

We have an action-packed weekend coming up:

We also have some external events and community notes at the end.

DC Secular Solstice - Saturday at 3:30 PM

Maia asked me to remind you all about this weekend’s Secular Solstice and share the following updates:

There will be a Secular Solstice celebration again this year on Saturday, December 2nd at the Langley Hill Friends Meeting in northern Virginia (6410 Georgetown Pike, McLean, VA 22101).

The theme this year is “Failed Experiments.” Please join us for a night of music celebrating how far humanity has come in an uncaring universe, and solemnly contemplating the losses and failures that we have faced and may face in the future.

Doors will open at 3:30pm for socializing, and the ritual will begin at 4pm, lasting approximately an hour and a half. Following, there will be an afterparty with food and refreshments at the party room in 1600 North Oak St, Arlington, VA.

Solstice and the afterparty are free to attend. Donations to help cover costs are appreciated, but not required. We’ll have more info about how to donate at the door.

Parking: When you arrive, follow signs for “Quaker Meeting” or “Country Day School.” Parking is permitted in gravel lot in the back of the meetinghouse, along the driveway on its left side, and along the side of Dogue Lane, the street on the right of the Meeting House. The Country Day School has allowed us to use their parking lot for the event, so you can also park in the paved lot to the left as you come in.

Childcare: I haven’t heard from anyone about this, and I was the only one using the paid childcare last year, so we’ve decided not to hire the babysitter this year. But if you plan to bring kids, I’d still love to hear from you so we can coordinate (my toddler will be in the audience with a friend).

Songs: We have a song list for the year! If you want to familiarize yourself with what we’ll be singing ahead of time so you can sing along, check it out here: https://tigrennatenn.neocities.org/solstice_2023

Let me ([email protected]) or Rivka ([email protected]) know if you have any questions or concerns.

See you soon!

ACX DC Social - Sunday starting at 5PM

Join us this Sunday for a free-wheeling discussion on Non-Profit Governance, potential AI Policy Legislation, and other similarly scintillating subjects.

We'll have several out-of-town guests, including Eneasz Brodski of Denver Lesswrong and so many podcasts, plus a few others too off-the-grid to mention.

This event will be at my apartment in Arlington: 2001 Columbia Pike #703, Arlington, VA 22204. We're starting this earlier than usual since Sunday is a school night. (Many people will be at the Solstice event Saturday). As usual, we'll have drinks and refreshments.

Parking in my building's lot is legal until 10PM; some nearby blocks on 9th St, Veitch St, and 6th St are also unrestricted. If you're brave, a scooter or bikeshare from Clarendon is pretty convenient too.

When you arrive, use the callbox at the entrance facing Columbia Pike to call Apartment 703 if the front door is locked. Alternatively, you can reach me by responding to this email, or through the facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/692045652688069

Other Notes

  • Meetups Coordinator Skyler Crossman is hosting an East Coast Rationalist Megameetup in New York City starting Friday, December 8th. This is timed to coincide with NYC’s Winter Solstice on Saturday, December 9th.

    • This year’s event is more ambitious, in a hotel with substantially more room and a higher participant cap than in the past. Since shared and single rooms are available, it’s a better fit for more in our community.

    • I will be attending, as are several other locals.

    • Registration will be open for a few more days at https://rationalistmegameetup.com/

  • Bay Area Solstice will be Saturday, December 16th, in Berkeley CA.

  • We’re skipping Crystal City Board Games this month due to travel schedules. Our next will be Sunday, January 7th.
