Upcoming September ACX Events

Board Game Day 9/24, Cryptocurrency Regulation Discussion 9/30, plus more community events and notes

It was great seeing everyone last night at our DC ACX Meetups Everywhere event! Andrew Willsen’s podcast experiment went well; I overheard several fascinating conversations. (I might have participated myself, but you can never prove that.) He plans to release a rough cut sometime this coming week.

I wanted to follow up immediately with some upcoming events. We have an unusually packed calendar this month and some community notes at the end. Note that several of these are posted with event reminders in our facebook group. The group is new, most people reading this email are not in it. If you use facebook, even if you think you’re in it, confirm that you’re actually signed up at this link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/605023464809227/

  • Next Saturday, September 16th:

    • Dan Moller is hosting an ACX Meetups Everywhere Event for College Park, Maryland. It will be on the steps in front of McKeldin library, on UMD’s campus, starting at 2pm.
See this LessWrong Event for details.

    • Eliza Johnathan is hosting a Game Night at Michael Tint’s house in Logan Circle, starting at 7pm.
See this Facebook Event for details.

    • These events are timed so that you can go to both, and I expect several people will.

  • Sunday, September 24th

    • We’re having our monthly Crystal City Board Game Day, starting at Noon. See details below or at this Facebook Event.

    • Rivka is hosting an ACX Meetups Everywhere event for Baltimore, Maryland. It will be at the Performing Arts and Humanities Building on the UMBC campus starting at 7pm.
See this LessWrong Event for details and RSVPs.

    • These events are also timed so you can go to both, and I plan to. Reach out to me, John, if you would like a ride to Baltimore from Arlington.

  • Saturday, September 30th

    • Ben Schwab is hosting a Dedicated Discussion Meetup on Cryptocurrency Regulation at his home in Herndon, Virginia.
See details below or at this Facebook Event.

ACX DC Board Game Day in Crystal City

DALL-E: “chess, checkers and compass rose on a light blue background, digital art”

Join us for an afternoon of casual board games! We'll be in "The Landing" in Crystal City, starting at Noon.

Drop-ins are welcome and part of the group will be there at least a few hours. We usually have 2-3 games going at any one time, and the crowd typically breaks up a bit after 4pm. RSVP if you're in so that I can get an idea of the headcount.

If you'd like, bring a game you enjoy and would like to teach. To get the party started, I'll be bringing several games, including Wavelength, Splendor, Azul, Concordia, and Ticket To Ride (Europe). We’ll also have snacks and soda.

The Landing is a food court and unofficial board-game hangout. We won't be taking over the place, but there's plenty of room and games to join until the bridge biddies arrive. It's in the mall connected to the Crystal City Metro Station, and parking is free in the underground garages on weekends. Most food options in the mall area are closed weekends, but there are several options now on Crystal Drive, including an Amazon Fresh store. A Whole Foods is three blocks away on 12th St.

Note that the glass atrium entrance has been intermittently closed due to construction. You can still get in through the nearby Crystal Drive or Metro entrances.

ACX DC Discussion Meetup Cryptocurrency Regulation

Join us for Washington DC's Astral Codex Ten next Dedicated Discussion Meetup in Herndon. The question to be discussed is "Should cryptocurrency be regulated and if so, how?"

The discussion will happen from approximately 7:30 pm until 9:00 pm. You can arrive as early as 6:30 PM and there will be an informal social before and after the dedicated discussion. Some snacks and refreshments will be provided; feel free to bring your own.

This will take place at 205 Meeting House Station Square #403, Herndon, Virginia 20170. There is a parking lot for the building, nearby street parking, and rides from the Herndon metro station can be arranged. Call or text Ben at 240-391-6021 to gain entry to the building.

Community Notes:

Maia Werbos of LessWrong DC is recruiting musicians and singers for a Winter Secular Solstice Celebration to be held Saturday, December 2nd. She and the team need people who can commit to about seven rehearsals, to be held in Rockville or Hanover, Maryland in October and November. They’re especially looking for folks who can sing an alto or tenor part. If you play an instrument or sing and you're interested in helping out, email Maia at mwerbos[at]gmail[dot]com.

Baltimore LessWrong has events weekly, alternating between in-person and virtual. Baltimore is just far enough away that we only cross-post their big events to the DC lists, like the Meetups Everywhere mentioned above. Email rivka[at]adrusi[dot]com if you’d like to be added to their mailing list for the other events.

If you’re traveling this fall, check out the other ACX Meetups Everywhere events listed on Astral Codex Ten. I’ve found it fun and rewarding to reach out to the local ACX/rationalist community whenever I’m in another city. It never fails to generate great conversations. I [John] attended Boston’s last weekend and plan to be at Denver’s next weekend. Nearby or otherwise notable cities with events in the coming weeks:
